icon12/04/2007 - FAQ's about ALL STAR CHEERLEADING

Freqently Asked Questions about ALL STAR CHEERLEADING!

*Please note your age as of August 31, 2009
Exception:  The cut-off date for the maximum age of teh Sr. Teams (18) will remain May 31, 2009 for the 09-10 season.  For the 10-11 competition season, it will change to August 31st.

Please bring a copy of your birth certificate to try outs.
There is a $30.00 fee for tryouts.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

 01. What kind of a time commitment is involved in being a member of a Paradise team?

While many people think that all star teams practice extensively, this is a misconception. Each team at Paradise will practice twice per week for a total of 4 hours. This allows our athletes plenty of time to be involved in other activities and school related functions. Furthermore, during the summer months our teams will try not to practice on Saturdays or Sundays. This is done in an effort to allow families to travel throughout the summer and spend time together without the worry of missed practices. When the school year begins, the schedule changes and our teams practice twice per week with one of those two practices falling on weekends. This would be done to try and help prevent our athletes from being out on multiple school nights, allowing them to concentrate on school work and to keep their grades and success in school as their primary priority. We do schedule extra practices prior to our most major competitions, but this scheduling is done with much advanced notice and generally takes place on weekends. All of our weekday practices will held between the hours of 5:30-9:00 to allow working families plenty of time to travel to and from the gym.

02. What kind of travel and travel expenses can I expect?

While it is true that our teams travel to National competitions, no team at Paradise will take more than 2 trips per season requiring flights.  The competition schedule for the upcoming season is planned in advance and will be given to each family at our parent meeting. Because trips are planned early, our parents have the opportunity to find very inexpensive airfare deals. In addition, when the gym selects hotels, cost is a primary consideration and many options are given to fit within the needs of each family. Most importantly, our Fundraising Committee will be a separate, non-profit organization that helps our athletes to raise funds for these trips. All athletes have the opportunity to participate in fundraising offered by our Fundraising Committee and to share in those profits. The competition schedule for the upcoming season is currently being developed and will be available shortly.

03. Do I have to travel with my child?

Parents are not required to travel with their child to competitions although many
choose to. If a child is attending a tournament without a guardian, then a member
of our staff or another family at Paradise will assume responsibility for that
child. For safety reasons, we do not allow any children to take flights or to stay in
hotel rooms unaccompanied by an adult. On the other hand, when a child is
traveling with their parent or family, they are always permitted to stay together,
both on flights and in hotels. The children do not have to fly with their teammates
or stay with their teammates in hotel rooms, but instead can travel with their own
families.

04. Can my child cheer for Paradise and their school team or pop warner league at the same time?

The answer to this question is yes, but it is necessary to coordinate your schedule to make sure that your child does not have conflicts. Because Paradise will provide you with a complete practice schedule for the entire season, it is easy to give that schedule to your other coach to avoid conflicts. While we encourage our athletes to be involved in their schools and communities, it is necessary to make certain that they will not be missing extensive practices (for either their all-star team or their school team) as this will not benefit either.  Paradise also offers a Paradise Palms program which allows the athlete to finish out their pop warner season and come compete at the later competitions for Paradise.  This program "rents" uniforms to the athlete, and more affordable for the athlete that does not want to make the full year committment.

05. How many teams make up the Paradise program?

Currently for this season, Paradise has 7 all star teams, although this number can vary from season to season. Although Paradise is a new gym, it will be a place where everyone knows one another. Throughout the season, our parents and families get to know our entire coaching staff very well. Parents are encouraged to talk with coaches any time they have questions and feel free to speak with Tina (the gym owner) is always available to meet with any family. While each team has 2 primary coaches, our entire staff is always on hand to help each other out. Paradise would like to promise that no matter how big the size of our gym grows, our athletes will never be “lost in the crowd” and each individual receives a great deal of personal attention from our staff.

06. What are the requirements to make a team at Paradise?

THERE ARE NO REQUIREMENTS TO CHEER AT PARADISE. Through talking with others, we have found that this is one of the biggest misconceptions about an all star gym. There are NO specific skill requirements to be on ANY team in our gym. This includes our advanced teams. Each one of our teams is balanced in an effort to ensure them success within the division they are competing. This means that each team has strong tumblers, strong jumpers, strong bases and flyers, great dancers and great performers in an effort to maximize each team’s success. For example, it would make no sense to put all of the best tumblers on one team because tumbling is only one small section of a much larger scoring system. On the other hand, if we were to choose some skilled tumblers, others who had exceptional jumps, and some who were great dancers and performers, we would enable that team to score well in virtually all categories.

07. What happens if I don’t make a team?

This is impossible. Every child who attends tryouts will make a team at Paradise. We believe that every child who wants to participate in all-star cheerleading should have that opportunity and for this reason we do not cut people from our program. We also believe that every child has the potential to be an outstanding athlete and cheerleader, regardless of their skill level or cheerleading experience. We believe that it is our job to train our athletes to reach their full potential. Our entire staff is incredibly knowledgeable with years of coaching experience and is completely committed to making each cheerleader the very best they can be. Our kids receive training from a very professional, caring, and motivated staff dedicated and committed to the kids we coach. At Paradise, every age and every skill level is welcome, and we have a team to accommodate each individual child.

08. How many advanced teams do you have at Paradise?

This season, we would like at least 3 out of the expected 7 teams to compete in advanced divisions. There is an advanced division for every age group in all stars, from children who are in kindergarten to college. This is important because it means that those who enter the gym with strong skills or develop strong skills throughout the season will always have the opportunity to compete them. Intermediate divisions restrict and/or limit certain skills (such as a full twist in tumbling or certain dismounts in stunting). We believe in rewarding the hard work of our athletes by ensuring that they can compete every skill that they have mastered and are not limited by restrictions in divisions. While divisions can change from year to year, this season we anticipate having at least 3 out of the 7 teams compete at the advanced level.   Again, every child has a place at Paradise and a team which would fit their needs.

09. What is the difference in skill levels between the younger and older teams at Paradise?

There is no difference in skill level between our younger and older teams. In fact, many of our younger athletes are some of the strongest children in our program. We believe that our young athletes are capable of mastering & competing the same difficult skills as their older counterparts, and visa-versa our younger athletes have someone to look up to and to help them to acheive those skills.  In other words, we do not believe that age in any way restricts the ability of our younger kids & we believe in training them to safely compete the same difficult tumbling and stunting as our older teams. We believe that our youngest athletes are the future of our program & some of the hardest working kids in our gym. They often times learn skills quicker than any other age group & we believe in giving them every resource and opportunity to excel.

10.   What can I expect at tryouts?

Tryouts will be held and broken down into specific age groups and levels.  Dates and times for each age group are posted in our news section. Remember that no child will be cut from our program at tryouts. Instead, the tryout process is used to place athletes accordingly onto the team which is best suited for them. Our tryout process is very laid-back and non-intimidating. The kids will be given material to learn & our staff will both instruct and observe them. We will be looking to see all of their skills from stunting ability (either flying or basing), to jumping, tumbling, dance and cheer. The kids are not singled out and asked to do things alone (such as cheer or dance), but instead learn and then perform as a group. We spend a lot of time talking to the kids & helping them so that they can have the best tryout experience possible. If they do not yet tumble on their own or are hesitant to, we will spot them to help them feel secure. We do our best to make sure that tryouts are fun and rewarding so that each child leaves feeling excited about the upcoming season.

What if I have vacation time planned over the summer?

It is perfectly fine for families to vacation over the summer. All that we ask is for each family to provide us with their vacation times & missed practices in a timely manner. We know that summer is a time to enjoy & we only ask that families make every effort to avoid excessive absences.

A.   I’ve heard that there are new age guidelines for all-star cheerleading. How does this affect me?

For the 2009-2010 season, the most major change in all-star cheerleading is age-based. For the 2009-2010 season, most athletes who have graduated high school will still be permitted to cheer on our Senior level teams. Therefore, if you are graduating from high school this year but still have the desire to cheer, you can contact us directly to see if you will still be eligible. You can contact us by phoning the gym at 239-573-4247or by emailing Tina at TMTomasino@paradiseallstarcheer.com

B.   Does your program have CoEd teams where both males and females can participate?

We would like to have both males and females at every age level in our gym. Both boys and girls are welcome to attend our tryout.

C.  Does your program offer scholarships to graduating Seniors?

We would like to offer scholarships each year at our banquet (with the help of our Fundraising committee) that will be held for all of our athletes and their families at the end of the season. All scholarships would be given out at this time. In our first year, we hope that Paradise will be able to give out a scholarship to our graduating Seniors who will be attending colleges. Our scholarship funds would be generated through cash prizes won at events throughout the year, scholarship funds set up through private individuals/companies, and our Fundraising committee.

D.  Do your athletes cheer for college programs after graduating from your program?

In the past, Tina had many of her past athletes go on to cheer in college. For Seniors looking to continue their cheerleading career in college, our staff will help you through the college tryout process, video evaluations sent to college coaches, and assist you in contacting your college coaches. It is also important to note that many of our athletes will be approached by recruiters at National events & many will be awarded college scholarships to cheer.

E.  Outside of all-star practices, what other types of classes or instruction can I take at Paradise?

Paradise will offer extra tumbling classes during the week. We will also offer specialty classes for jumps and flexibility, standing tumbling & front tumbling.  All of our all-stars receive unlimited time inside the gym to participate in classes & open gyms.
Private lessons are available to all of our students both for stunting and for tumbling.

F. What is your new facility like?

Our facility is located in Cape Coral, FL very close to the Mid Point Bridge, Fort Myers, North Fort Myers.  It is easily accessible from all major highways. Our gym is 7,500 square feet and is fit to accommodate all star cheerleading. We have a 54 x 42 spring floor, 42 x 42 foam block floor, in ground tumble trak with in ground pit, in ground trampoline with twisting belt plus lots of additional spotting mats & equipment used to train tumbling. Our gym allows our athletes to develop and progress their skills in a clean and safe environment.

G.  How are practices run and how do the staff and cheerleaders interact together?

While we believe that it is our job to push our athletes to reach and obtain their goals, the atmosphere at Paradise is fun and enjoyable. Our coaches treat our athletes kindly and with the respect they deserve. We believe in positive reinforcement and in motivating and encouraging our athletes. While gymnastic and cheerleading training is certainly our primary focus, we realize that we are coaching kids and that they need to have fun in this sport. In an effort to maximize their enjoyment and success, we plan on having lots of outside activities for our teams and our athletes to participate in. Whether it’s spending an evening at an amusement park or having team BBQ’s and pool parties or sleepovers, we try to create strong team bonds and relationships among our kids that will last long into the future. While we certainly believe in creating strong and competitive teams, we also believe that there is much more to be gained from cheerleading and team sports than banners and trophies.
